Once a hero, now a pariah, Richard Muller is humanity's last hope.

Richard Muller was an honorable diplomat who braved unimaginable dangers to make contact with the first-known race of intelligent aliens. But those aliens left a mark on him a psychic wound that emanates a telepathic miasma that his fellow humans can neither cure nor endure. Muller is exiled to the remote planet of Lemnos, where he is left, deeply embittered, at the heart of a deadly maze - until a new alien race appears, seemingly intent on exterminating humanity. Only Muller can communicate with them, due to the very condition that has made him an outcast. But will Muller stick his neck out for the people who so callously rejected him?

The Man in the Maze (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Silverberg Cassandra de Cuir director Stefan Rudnicki Skyboat Media Books

You just can't go wrong with Silverber. Even his worse books are better than 90% of what's out there. He always weaves some important philosophical issues in his stories that stay with you after you are done reading. This book explores the human condition from its highest highs to its lowest lows.
The man in the maze is Richard Muller, an ambitious and edonistic diplomat that accepts the highest profile, highest risk mission: first contact with the first sentient alien species found. The aliens can broadcast their emotions to each other, so noting Muller can't do the same, they think there's something wrong with him and "fix" him unbeknownst to him. But when he goes back among humans, the constant flow of emotions emanating from him makes everyone sick because the human soul isn't such a warm and fuzzy place after all, what with the envy and jealousy, resentment, regret, despair and hate that linger into us all. Muller goes into a self imposed exile in the one place he thinks nobody will get to him, an alien city built as a deadly maze by its long dead inhabitants, who must have been terribly fearful and paranoid of strangers. But his services are once again needed, and people will have to brave the maze to get to Muller and convince him to save humanity.
It must be noted that this book being old as it is, suffers of the terrible sexism that was so pervasive at the time. Yes, the women in the book are cringing, basically pieces of meat whose only job is to delight the men, who are the true movers and shakers of the galaxy. Again, getting angry at it is an exercise in futility, that was the normal view at the time it was written, and we can only be thankful that things have changed, hopefully. If you can't read an old book without raging about why they didn't think then like you do now, read something else. But skipping this book would be entirely your loss.

The Man in the Maze (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Silverberg Cassandra de Cuir director Stefan Rudnicki Skyboat Media Books Reviews

This book is one of my all-time favorites. It is one to which I find myself time and again returning.
One of my favorite books of all time.
This is a 2nd buy because original copy was read so many times it was in pieces by my grandson.
Long time favorite I reread from time to time. Classic early sci-fi. It'd make a great movie!
This was a really good story by an author who is new to me. I will be looking for more from him!
This book is the real deal, real sci-fi from before it was called sci-fi; Science Fiction at its greatest from one of the Masters of all time!!!!
Choppy first half. Not sure if original text was edited or done in reformatting.
I don't seem to have the same text as others are talking about.
Obvious spaces where fragments of details or descriptions were missing.
Some older text chapters numbers sitting in mid page on kindle.
The last 100 pages are cohesive and readable. So 50 - 50 split rating 5 on 10 scale.
Not his best work but I really like a lot of his other works.
